SWINE FLU????

This is Mr. Van's Swine Flu update, which will hopefully answer two questions; first, what are the symptoms, and second, what should I do if I or my child start showing symptoms. If you or a member of your family has a fever or high temperature (over 38 degrees Celsius/100.4 degrees Fahrenheit) and two or more of the following symptoms, you may have swine flu: unusual tiredness, headache, runny nose, sore throat, shortness of breath, or cough, loss of appetite, aching muscles, diarrhea or vomiting.

In general, doctors are advising that anyone who has the swine flu treat it like any other flu case. Treat it at home with lots of rest, lots of liquids, and keep an eye on their temperature. Stay home at least 24 hours after the symptoms, including the fever are gone before returning to work or school. There are signs to watch for both with the swine flu or any other form of the flu that should signal a call to your doctor.

More serious symptoms that would indicate that a child with swine flu would need urgent medical attention includes:

*Fast Breathing/trouble breathing
*Bluish/gray color skin
*Not drinking enough fluids
*Severe/persistent vomiting
*Not waking up or not interacting
*Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
*Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough

Please remember that in any case, if you have a concern call your pediatrician for advice. After all, my degree is in education, not medicine.

Mr. Van
